Housing FAQs

The costs associated with Housing can be viewed on our Housing & Dining Rates page.

We do not have a formal deadline – as the space is on a first come, first served basis. We then transition our application list to a waitlist.

In general, we base room assignments off of age, gender, and major – plus if there may be a specific request such as a roommate.

Specific requests, such as room type or roommates must be requested prior to August 1; after this date, we may not be able to honor a request.

While the deposit deadline helps prioritize the order in which we offer rooms, such as a single, so does the completion of your obligations (Look at Step 4). Once you receive your charges around July 5, you are able to complete the financial obligations which would allow you to then be assigned a room. If you wait until later in the summer such as August, there may not be singles available at this point.

We make assignments starting shortly after July 4.  However, students only receive their assignment after they have satisfied their requirements, including registration for 12 or more credits, as well as their financial obligations.  Prior to receiving their assignment, students have an accurate meal plan and room charge added to their account, waiting for completion.

Assignments will be on the MyHousing Portal under MyCollege and will provide details of room type (double, single, or super single) as well information on roommates and apartmentmates.

Staff will be available during check-in at the Student Village. The actual key is a key-fob, a magnetic keyless entry device that is scanned at your bedroom door.

Your SUNY Broome ID Card will be needed for the front building doors, and your apartment door. ID Cards are provided through Public Safety – and will say “Student Resident.”

Please note: There is a hefty cost to replace the key-fob, and the SUNY Broome ID, if lost.

Students must register their vehicle with Public Safety and park in the appropriate designated parking area. There is no additional cost to the student to register a vehicle since a transportation fee is part of all students’ bill. Students can also ride the public transportation (BC Transit) for free with their SUNY Broome ID card.

Each bedroom comes with a Twin XL mattress, a desk and desk chair, a closet and a small dresser. The common area provides a small table and chairs, as well as seating and tables for the living room.

All residents share a mailbox with their apartmentmates down in the lobby of the Student Village. In general packages are mailed right to the building. Use the following address:

Every floor has washing machines and dryers that are open to the students in the Student Village. This is included in the cost of housing.

The Student Village is fully equipped to provide wireless internet access to student residents. No cable tv is available – please utilize your personal streaming services.

Students must be in possession of their key-fob at all times to ensure proper security of the hall as well as their apartment and room.

If a student has been locked out of their room or apartment, please try to locate a roommate/apartmentmate to assist. If not available, find a Housing staff member, such as a Resident Assistant, or swing by the Housing Office (SV-102) during business hours. You must provide identification. If identification is in the room, the student must present it before being allowed to remain in the room.

Students, upon signing up for housing, are required to have a meal plan. To pay for a meal at the dining hall, swipe your SUNY Broome ID card at the card-reader. The meal will be deducted from your total allotment. Your meals for the week reset on Monday morning.

All residents have access to a full kitchen within their apartment – you must bring the cooking equipment.

Not here at the Student Village. Although the building is locked 24/7, students can come in and out as they please.

Grab a workout at our Student Village Fitness Center or at the Hornets Fitness Lab, which features a range of fitness equipment.

Go ice skating in the SUNY Broome Ice Center, or check out the video arcade while you’re there.

Check out one of the productions in our Little Theater.

Check out our radio station, The Hive.

Become a volunteer.

Join a sports team or check out a Hornets game.

Join one of our more than 50 clubs, which cover a wide range of interests.

At SUNY Broome, a Registered Nurse and a Nurse Practitioner are available to help with your health concerns. They can also provide referrals to other physicians, specialists, and community health agencies. Visit the Health Services site for more information.

There are several pharmacies located within a two-mile radius of campus, including CVS and the Weis Supermarket.

If students are unable to work things out among themselves, we suggest seeking assistance from someone else, such as the Resident Assistant. The Resident Assistant can sit down with all parties and help mediate the situation by creating a safe environment where all parties can speak openly. In addition, the Resident Assistant can help the suite establish a suite-mate agreement in which certain expectations are written out, signed by all parties and posted in the apartment.

Per NYS Education Law Article 129-A, Section 6438-ASUNY Broome Community College provides training in the administration of opioid antagonists (Naloxone) to housing employees and resident assistants. Opioid antagonists are accessible by every resident assistant for use during emergencies to any student, staff or other individual on college-owned or college-operated housing premises suspected of having an opioid overdose whether or not there is a previous history of opioid abuse.

The BC (Broome County) Transit bus line stops on campus and travels regularly throughout the community.

Bus schedules are available in the Student Village main lobby and the Student Center hallway.

Students may ride any BC Transit routed bus for free upon showing their current student ID to the bus driver.

Please Note: ID cards may be used on the fixed route service only. The Route 8/Front St. route stops on campus.

Plenty! Upper Front Street alone includes McDonald’s, Applebee’s, Cracker Barrel, Starbucks, Nirchi’s Pizza, The Spot Diner, Sonic, Subway, Grande’s Restaurant, Burger King, Moe’s Southwest Grill, and Hoopla Frozen Yogurt.

Student can also easily hop on a bus to downtown Binghamton or to the Vestal Parkway to get an additional selection of local eateries.

Since the suites in the Student Village have a full-sized kitchen, students can take advantage of purchasing groceries or other food items right on Upper Front Street.

Supermarkets include MaineSource Food & Party Warehouse, Aldi and Weis Markets. There is also a Price Chopper further up the road. Wegman’s Supermarket is also located close by in Johnson City, a 10 minute ride by bus.

For students looking for more elaborate shopping, like purchasing clothes, gifts or other accessories, they can take the bus to downtown Binghamton for boutique shopping, to the Oakdale Mall for lunch and “mall” shopping, or to Vestal Parkway, the region’s commercial center.

It’s easy to see a movie, simply walk across the street to Regal Cinemas!

Looking for art-house films? Check out The Art Mission & Theater in downtown Binghamton.

You can see an opera, or check out a range of shows at Binghamton University’s Anderson Center for the Performing Arts, the Endicott Performing Arts Center, the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, the Goodwill Theater and the Cider Mill Playhouse – just to name a few!

Check out the red pandas, the meercats and the other critters at the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, or learn something new at The Roberson Museum and Science Center.

Gaze up at the stars at The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center.

Catch a Binghamton Mets baseball game or Binghamton Senators hockey game.

Once a month, downtown Binghamton showcases its art galleries, stores and local performers for the First Friday Art Walk, which runs from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

On the hill behind the Ice Center and near the Hornet Field, you will find campus nature trails that offer both natural beauty and a peaceful atmosphere.

Love plants? You’ll appreciate the nearby Cutler Botanic Gardens.

Otsiningo Park has two entrances nearby: one on Bevier Street and one on Front Street. It features paved exercise trails along the Chenango River, sports fields, four sand volleyball courts, a bocce court, community gardens, picnic areas and more. It also hosts a regional Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

Further afield, Broome County has many parks with hiking and nature trails, summertime swimming, cross-country skiing, kayak and sailboat rentals and more. Chenango Valley State Park in Fenton is described as an “ice age wonder.”

Like to bike? Full-time SUNY Broome students qualify for free membership in the Southern Tier Bicycle Club.

Believed to have been invented in nearby Endicott (which is also the birthplace of IBM, coincidentally), spiedies are a local delicacy consisting of cubes of marinated meat served on bread. The name comes from an Italian word for meat cooked on a skewer.

The Broome County area loves its spiedies; the annual Spiedie Fest & Balloon Rally is one of the region’s biggest events.

Great local places to go and try a spiedie are Spiedie and Rib Pit or Lupo’s Original Spiedies.
