If you’re a U.S. veteran, a grant can cover the tuition, fees, and books associated with a SUNY Broome microcredential.
What is a microcredential?
A microcredential is a skill set focused on a specific career path or discipline, earned in a shorter timeframe than a certificate or degree. It can be an ideal leg up for those new to the workforce or those looking to pivot in their careers. A microcredential is not necessarily a self-contained course – it may be a short series of regularly-offered SUNY Broome courses, and students not enrolled in the microcredential may be taking the class as well.
I’m a veteran. Why should I pursue a microcredential at SUNY Broome?
Microcredentials allow you to build specific skill sets without the time or financial commitment required of a certificate or degree program. They’re also an ideal way to explore whether a career or industry you’re considering is right for you, especially if you are coming out of a career-length enlistment.
What microcredentials can I enroll in?
SUNY Broome offers a wide range of credit and non-credit microcredential options – visit sunybroome.edu/microcreds for more details on your options.
Can I use this grant to cover a credit or non-credit microcredential?
Yes. This grant covers tuition, fees, and books associated with credit or non-credit microcredentials at SUNY Broome.

I’m a veteran and would like to register for a non-credit microcredential. Can I do this online?
No. In order to process payment through the grant program, you will need to call the SUNY Broome Continuing Education office at 607-778-5012 and register by phone.
What documentation is necessary to confirm my military veteran status?
You will be required to produce your DD214 — Member 4 page (email or hard copy).
Can my spouse or dependents apply for tuition money from this grant?

I’m just separating from my branch of service and don’t have a full year of residency in New York – do I have to wait a year to take advantage of in-state tuition levels?
Veterans qualify for in-state tuition at SUNY Broome, regardless of length of residency or current physical residence.
I’m a veteran and currently a SUNY Broome student – can I take advantage of this grant money for my tuition?
If you are already using your military educational benefits, continue to do so. If you’re a new student and a veteran or a current SUNY Broome student and veteran who is not using military educational benefits to cover your tuition, fees, and books, you may apply for this grant program. This grant is limited in time and scope.
What if I have an extenuating circumstance – a hospitalization, an extremely ill spouse or child, etc. – and fail a class associated with the microcredential, or I drop out of the class?
Unlike non-veteran students enrolled in SUNY Broome courses, veterans who enroll in this program and either fail a course or drop out are not billed.
What if I fail or drop out of a microcredential course? Will the grant pay for me to take the same course twice?
There are a limited amount of funds associated with this grant. If another veteran who has not failed/dropped a class is waiting to enroll in a microcredential course, he or she will receive priority. However, if there is not another veteran waiting to enroll, and funds are available, you may be allowed a second attempt.
