Non Native Speakers of English

SUNY Broome offers a full range of ESL courses.  Whether you are a matriculated or non-matriculated student, if English is not your first language, you will be asked to take a quick ESL Placement.   This Placement will provide you with the appropriate level of ESL needed.

You may be waived from this Placement if you have taken a TOEFL, IELTS, iTEP, or other ESL courses, depending on your scores.*  If you are waived, you will be placed in ENG 107 or ENG 108, which is the college level requirement needed.

Please note:  If you are an F1 (Student Visa) student, and you are placed in a lower level of ESL, your I-20 will be changed accordingly, and the length or your program time, extended as needed.

*Criteria for Exemption from Placement testing

  • TOEFL – score of 79 iBT, 200 CBT, or 500 paper-based, or higher
