English Language Proficiency Advising
All non-native speakers of English students applying for admission at SUNY Broome are required to prove their English language proficiency. Whether you are a matriculated or non-matriculated student, if English is not your first language, and you do not have verification of your English level (transcripts, exam scores – see below); you will be asked to take our ESL Placement . We accept the following Language Assessment examinations. TOEFL, IELTS, or DuoLingo. Any acceptable scores that you have taken within the last two (2) years are considered:
- TOEFL score of 79 iBT, 200 cBT, or 500 paper-based, or higher;
- IELTS score 6.5 or higher;
- IKEN grade of 1;
- iTEP score of 4.5.
- DuoLingo score of 105 or higher
If you have not taken any of these exams, our ESL Placement Assessment will determine your level and based on the scores, you may be placed in either ENG 107 (College English for non-native English Speakers), or possibly ENG 110 (College English).
If your score is below our requirement, you will need to attend an ESL program in your home country, or enroll in a U.S. based Language institution. Upon successful completion, we will be able to put you into our college level English.
Non-native English-speaking students that have graduated from a US high school, or have a US GED, or a High School Equivalency may be waived from taking an English Proficiency exam prior to attending SUNY Broome.
