Establish a Scholarship:
The Foundation awards hundreds of scholarships each year to students based on merit and/or financial need. Scholarships can be established on an annual basis, in memory or honor of someone special or through the creation of an endowment.
Please contact Lisa Schappert, Senior Director of Development & Alumni Relations, for more information.
Fund a Grant-in-Aid:
The SUNY Broome Foundation proudly offers grants-in-aid to supplement federal and state financial aid to SUNY Broome students, expanding a tradition begun in 1953 by the College’s Student Aid Association. Today, approximately 87% of SUNY Broome students have some level of financial need. Our mission at the Foundation is to help alleviate some of that burden so that our students can afford to continue their educational journey. Our grants-in-aid program is designed to financially assist students needing additional support without needing to borrow funds to cover costs.
Grants-in-Aid: the Awards Process
1. Application: students submit FAFSA Forms, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, to a federal agency that notifies the Financial Aid Office, who prepares students’ financial aid packages.
2. Selection criteria for each grant are established by the donor’s instructions to the Foundation. Selection is made by the Financial Aid Office.
3. Payment is made by the Financial Aid Office directly to students’ accounts and is paid over and above federal and state aid. These funds help fill the gap of unmet need by reducing loans first, then work study awards, then any needs-based grants.
Please contact Lisa Schappert, Senior Director of Development & Alumni Relations, for more information on how you can fund a grant-in-aid.
Create An Endowment:
An endowment is an investment in SUNY Broome. A minimum of $10,000 is needed to establish a fund. Earnings from the principal amount can be used to support general purposes, scholarships, faculty development, or special programs at the donor’s requests. Donors may continue to contribute annually to their established endowment to provide additional support to their fund.
Please contact the Foundation at 607-778-5182 for more information.

After you provide some details about the assets you wish to transfer, you can either print and mail your forms, or donate entirely electronically — whichever you’re comfortable with. IRA Gifts:
IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions
If you are 70.5 or older, you are eligible to make an IRA contribution that benefits you and allows SUNY Broome to continue assisting students. These gifts are tax-free, regardless of whether or not you itemize deductions on your tax return.
For individuals 72 and older who need to fulfill a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) this year — an IRA gift can help meet this requirement and help you avoid a hefty tax penalty at the same time.
