Some of our amazing employees
November 2023 – April 2024
SUNY Broome Family
“I brought my boys (7 and 8) to campus for the Veterans’ Day event, the first of many stops over the long weekend. On Sunday evening, we realized my first grader lost his beloved crocheted turkey hat at some point during our adventures. After calling all the stores we went to, plus the library and Grama’s house (another weekend stop), I emailed Public Safety, and was so thrilled to learn that the kindness of someone on campus meant our turkey hat was safely in the lost and found.” – Sarah Armstrong
Kalis Nunes
“Kalis’ upbeat attitude and persistent confidence never fails to keep morale high in the housing office, even during stressful periods. He is unwaveringly strong, always trying to lighten the load of the RAs and other professional staff on his team by taking up extra tasks and advocating for us when needed. His dominating presence and his unending knowledge of all things SUNY Broome and beyond, coupled with his high standards for cleanliness, behavior, and work ethic has allowed the Student Village to flourish the past two years we’ve been blessed to have him. ” – Blessin McFarlane
Kathi
“Kathi is a ray of sunshine in the cafeteria! Her pleasant disposition and ability to remember everything about everyone has turned me into a salad lover. She seems to know everyone’s salad order, their major, their goals, and about their family. She makes you feel so special, like you’re catching up with a friend while getting your salad.
It genuinely improves my mood going to the salad bar on campus. Everyone in the salad line raves about her, so I know she is improving other’s moods too. We are lucky to have her!” – Maureen Breck (ISAS ’13)
Samantha Smith (BUBA ’08; FS ’07; LAGS ’10)
“Samantha is an efficient and friendly presence in the Accessibility Resources Office. She works directly with students and is so good at explaining things about accommodations calmly and clearly. Samantha treats everyone with respect and really listens to problems and comes up with ways to solve them. SUNY Broome is lucky to have someone so dedicated to their job and someone who puts students first!” – Anonymous
Donna Ward-Stevenson
“Donna goes above and beyond to make sure students can understand and maximize their financial aid to make paying for college a reality. Most people would just refer students to the appropriate office, not Donna. She helps them navigate and closes the loop. She jokingly calls offices saying she’s our favorite “pain in the ass” – she is my favorite because of what she does for our students!” – Maureen Breck (ISAS ’13)
“She is so committed to the student she hunts the student down at the bus stop to update them. Seen this many times while out and about.” – Peter Brenchley
Susan Wellington
“We nominate Susan Wellington as a SUNY Broome VIP! Susan is very helpful to each of us with the competitive admission process, questions, helping students, Banner updates, etc. She is pleasant and accommodating. Admissions is lucky to have her. Susan is our SUNY Broome VIP!”– Maralena Dropp, Karoline Pignatelli & Heather Sutliff
July – October 2023 VIPs
Peter Brenchley
“Peter Brenchley has always provided outstanding service to us over here in the Student Services building! He works very hard to keep our office and the entire building clean. On numerous occasions, he has gone above and beyond to help staff with their requests. I have found Peter to be a very kind, caring, and motivated staff member here at SUNY Broome. I will never forget the time that the college was closing because of a snowstorm. As I was leaving the building, I noticed that Peter shoveled a path across the parking lot to my car door! I am honored to be working with Peter. He has a tremendous work ethic. He is definitely committed to the mission of our college.” – Martin Guzzi (BA ’83)
Jeff Kopolow
“Jeff is one of those “behind-the-scenes” employees. You might not see him around a lot but he makes this campus look amazing. His expert painting work is impressive and professional. It has made a big difference in a lot of spaces across campus. Working with Jeff is always a great experience. He works fast and gets you on the schedule as soon as he can. He is kind and helpful and willing to work with what you have in mind. He knows his craft and offers honest advice. He has done some projects for our area and it is always great to have him around. He would likely dismiss the praise but his happy disposition and personality make him a true VIP!” – Anonymous

“Linda is a wonderful and extremely inspiring person and has done so much for SUNY Broome employees in her role in Human Resources. For the past several months, she has assumed roles in the Administrative Suite to cover for others who have been out on medical leave. We will miss her as she retires, and we want to thank her for her dedication and willingness to go the extra mile. Thank you. Linda!” – Anonymous
Stacy Spence-Attleson
“When a brand-new student wandered into the Health Sciences suite looking for help, Stacy didn’t say “you’re not in my division/it’s not my job.” She personally escorted the student to THREE different offices on campus to help him get what he needed so he could obtain a student ID and be able to ride the bus back to his off-campus apartment. This was the student’s first time on campus in person and his experience went from frustrating to white-glove with Stacy’s help. She stepped in to be the student’s trusted adult, and gave him her contact info for the future. She absolutely put the student at the center. ” – Sarah Armstrong
Michael Streeter (LACM ‘14)
“I was having some trouble with the equipment [at an event]. I didn’t ask for help, he just stopped along his way to another event, which was very kind and super helpful! We’re happy to have you on campus! ” – Ashley Blackwell (LAGS ’04; ISAT ’13)

Even during the most challenging times, Patty puts her clients’ needs first. She is always smiling, has a positive attitude, and does anything she can to make others feel happy and appreciated. For that – we are all proud to nominate her as a VIP! We are so grateful for her!” – Justine Dadamio, Michael Stamets, and Cathy Abashian Williams

All TRC Staff
“Brightspace, Brightspace, Brightspace! From the pilot through full migration the TRC staff did a phenomenal job in making this transition to a new LMS as smooth as possible. They are a group that largely goes unrecognized for their efforts as much of their work is “behind the scenes”. The TRC is one of our greatest resources as educators. Maria Basualdo (BUBC ‘99)
“Maria is always kind and patient. She has been a safe haven for many of our international students, checking on them to make sure they are ok and connected to support. Maria is one of those unsung heroes who does her job so quietly and without any attention, under the radar most of the time. We appreciate her dedication all these years. ” – Anonymous
Nicole Brooks
“Nicole is such an amazing colleague and advisor! She is thoughtful and brightens everyone’s day. She is always student centered; she is willing to meet them where they are at, whether that be outside our regular hours or even once she offered to meet a student in Owego! “We received a nomination from a student for our Nursing Program Secretary – Maralena. As she is not eligible for the DAISY award at the nursing pinning ceremony, we want to recognize her contribution to our program. The student’s nomination says it all – “Maralena has been a tremendous help since the beginning of my nursing school journey. She’s always so kind and welcoming, responds to my questions/concerns quickly, helped me figure out paperwork at the start of the program and she’s doing this for so many students, it’s incredible. She’s a very hard worker and truly the backbone to the program!”” – Michele McKay

Susan George (BUAC ‘93)
“Sue has been a dedicated employee at SUNY Broome for over 39 years! She has a steady calm demeanor in help desk support, solving technical issues, scheduling lab proctors, scanning quizzes and evaluations. It has been great working with her to resolve issues. Not sure how we’re going to fill the void when she retires.” – Anonymous
“Sue has done an amazing job as long as I’ve known her. In my short nine months here she has helped me and the rest of us in ‘Media Services’ immensely. She will be retiring this year and we want to send her out with a bang. The least I could do on this front is to give her my nomination. Thank you for everything Sue.” – Joseph Cronin
Christopher Kushner (ES ‘88)
“Professor Chris Kushner’s office is typically teeming with students, who come to him for relaxed, judgment-free math help. He’s patient and easy going. He offers his assistance and expertise [to current and former students], guiding students to better understanding of mathematics. He’s humble & self-effacing and most worthy of any award.” – Anonymous
Evan Lawshe
“I lost my purse somewhere between campus and the CEC and was frantic. I called Public Safety early that evening and spoke with officer Evan Lawshe. He took my information and said he would be in touch. He called me back a bit later and told me that he reviewed the security footage, seeing that I had my purse with me when I entered the CEC for a meeting earlier that day; but didn’t have it when I left, indicating that it must be in the locked building. Evan is a great asset to our campus, always helpful & friendly, and I am happy to nominate him as VIP!” – Cathy Abashian Williams
Laura Maurer (OT ‘87)
“Laura has been the Stenographic Secretary to Counseling Services, and now- Student Health Services for many decades. Students, faculty and staff have come to rely on Laura and all of her knowledge. She is a friendly voice on the other end of the phone and a smiling face behind the glass window. She [makes] students and others feel most welcomed as they present in the office for some challenging issues.” – Melissa Martin
Rose Pero (ISAS ‘19)
“On the Friday before [the English Department’s Breaking Ground Magazine], Dr. Virginia Shirley found that all of the magazine files were corrupted. IT was able to recover an earlier version of the files. Rose took them home and spent hours of her own time reviewing every page to correct all errors so that the magazine would be perfect. She does her best work for us, always with kindness, great attention to detail, and total professionalism. She is truly an inspiring and amazing person!” – Mary Seel

Michael Sullivan
“Michael works very diligently with his team to ensure that the College remains financially solid, especially in this post-pandemic economy. Michael and his team financially support many positive upgrades to the campus physically and allocate funds for innovative academic and social programming. He doesn’t hesitate to promptly answer questions and offer suggestions to help. Often the data/numbers/finance employees on any campus unfairly get a bad rap, but in my years working with Michael, he has solidly remained a respectful and supportive colleague. He’s quiet, but funny, so stop him and say hello the next time you see him taking laps around the campus!” – Anonymous
Nicholas Wagner
“It has been my pleasure to work with and get to know Dr. Nick over the past year. I have learned so much from him, and he makes work a ton of fun! Nick is so much more than my boss; he is my teammate, my partner in shenanigans, and most importantly, my friend. They say “do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life,” but no one tells you, “find a boss you love, and work won’t feel like work.” I can’t imagine doing this without you. Thank you for being a friend!” – Rae Palmer-Jones (CJPO ’10)
