Program Brings SUNY Broome’s Men of Excellence Together with U-E Middle/High School Students & Local Law Enforcement

July 23, 2018 by realssl

Funded by a $10,000 grant from the Broome County Youth Bureau and administered by SUNY Broome’s Sponsored Programs Office in cooperation with EOP, “Lunch with the Law” is an exciting new initiative that brings law enforcement and young men of color together for conversation and learning. The program is led by Talik Farmer, a grant-funded student coordinator who was recruited as a result of his active involvement with SUNY Broome’s Men of Excellence.

Apprenticeship Programs at SUNY

June 14, 2018 by realssl

Purpose of Grant: To expand Registered Apprenticeship (RA) in New York, with a focus on engaging small, medium, and large employers to secure paid Registered Apprenticeships in high-skilled, high demand, competitive wage occupations with a focus on underrepresented groups. All activities are coordinated by The State University of New York (SUNY), in partnership with the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL), and Empire State Development Office of Workforce Development (OSWD).

Project Period: SUNY Apprenticeship Program (SAP) projects must be concluded prior to December 31, 2027.

Application Due Date: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, subject to funding availability. Applications must be submitted a minimum of three weeks prior to any scheduled activities.

Project Description: Beginning April 1, 2024 Apprenticeship Programs at SUNY will focus ALL activities on occupations rather than the industry sector of the employer. All processes including applications for pre-industry roundtables, apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship, etc. should be made based on this occupation-based approach. Occupation focus areas include: Advanced Manufacturing Occupations; Healthcare and Human Services Occupations; Other Occupations (excluding construction trade titles).

Eligible Applicants: In the NYS budget, SAP funding is designated for community colleges and Educational Opportunity Centers (EOCs), however required training for some trades or occupations, such as teacher, may only be offered at Apprenticeship Programs at SUNY State-Operated campuses. Only in the circumstance that the local community college is not able to provide the required training for the specific trade sought, a State-Operated campus may receive access to SAP funds.

When the local community college is able to satisfy the training requirements requested by an employer sponsor, SAP funding will not be available for a State-Operated campus to offer training. The State-Operated campus may choose to support the apprenticeship initiative with an employer sponsor, however is not eligible for SAP reimbursement.

Funding: Funding amounts are variable based on the proposed activities, with funding caps for certain activities. For applications for activities beginning on or after April 1. 2024:

  • Industry Roundtables: Up to $2,000 per in-person roundtable.
  • Pre-Apprenticeship Program (per apprentice): Up to $1,000 per pre-apprentice.
  • Related Instruction (RI) Costs: Either $6,000 or $8,000 per registered apprentice determined by trade/occupation title.
  • Curriculum Development: Commensurate with college policy, cap of $3,500 for a new course and $1,750 for course revision.
  • Hybrid & Competency-Based Assessment Tool Development and Administration: Determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Project Management (all projects are eligible): Up to 20% of total amount of activities for funded projects.
