SUNY Broome is announcing a new lineworker training program to prepare students for positions in the utility industry. This skilled labor is in demand. This training program will take students from no knowledge to being prepared for skilled positions at a variety of employers in the Southern Tier.
This program includes classroom instruction and hands-on training at a pole yard.
Participants are expected to pass a physical assessment that includes climbing a utility pole under supervision for entry into this program. Physical assessments will be conducted February through March 2024.
In order to qualify for a paid internship, participants must:
- Have earned a high school diploma or GED.
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver License (CDL).
b. Review the New York State CDL Manual
- Pass a drug screening.
Cost of the training and appropriate equipment is roughly $4,000, and scholarships may be available based on need.
The training is structured as the following. Detailed schedule information will be provided upon acceptance into the program.
- Training Part 1: April 15, 2024 through May 24, 2024 (Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
- Paid Internship: Tentatively June through August 2024
- Training Part 2: Tentatively September 9, 2024 through October 4, 2024
- Interviews will be scheduled at the completion of the program.
