From valleys to geysers and bubbling hot springs, Iceland is a land of geological phenomena. Discover how the country harnesses geothermal waste to stretch natural resources even further—and reduce its environmental impact, too. Things heat up at Geysir geothermal area, cool down at Thorsmork Glacier Valley, and turn simply breathtaking at Gullfoss waterfall. Looking for history? Soak up Iceland’s rugged past during a stroll through the National Museum, and glimpse present day politics at the official residence of Iceland’s president.
Course Description
PHS 292 DISCOVER ICELAND
2 credits
This two-credit seminar course covers geologic and environmental aspects of Iceland through a week long study. Students will select topics for in-depth study to be presented upon course completion.
Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Fly overnight to Reykjavik
Day 2: Reykjavík -Hvolsvöllur area
- Take a walking tour of Reykjavík
- Visit the National Museum, which houses a famous carving known as the Valþjófsstaður door
- Enjoy breakfast and dinner
Day 3: Hvolsvöllur area
- Take an excursion to Thingvellir National Park
- Visit the Gullfoss waterfall
- Visit the Geysir geothermal area
- Travel to the Hvolsvöllur are
- Visit a greenhouse powered by geothermal and hydroelectric energy
- Enjoy breakfast and dinner
Day 4: Hvolsvöllur area
- Take an excursion to the Thorsmork Glacier Valley
- Visit the Thorvaldseyri Farm and learn about impact of volcanic eruption on farming
- Visit the Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls
- Visit the Skógarfoss Folk Museum
- Travel to the Village of Vik
- Take Glacier Walk excursion
- Enjoy breakfast and dinner
Day 5: Reykjavík
- Take a hike in Reykjadalar valley
- Visit natural hot streams and geothermal springs
- Return to Reykjavík in the evening
- Visit a geothermal power plant and learn about sustainable energy and natural hot springs
- Enjoy breakfast and dinner
Day 6: Reykjavík
- Take an excursion to Alftanes peninsula
- See Bessastaðir, the official residence of the president
- Continue to Hafnarfjörður and Lake Kleifarvatn
- Bathe in the Blue Lagoon
- Enjoy breakfast and dinner
Day 7: Depart for home
