Health Information Technology Mission and Goals

Mission:

The mission of health information management education is to prepare confident, innovative, and contributing professionals who can identify and use a variety of information resources and technologies to accomplish the objectives of diverse practice environments. It provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become self-directed learners who possess critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities as well as communication and interpersonal skills. It instills a commitment to life-long learning and important ethical values. As practitioners, graduates of programs will serve society and the profession through collaborative practice, innovative teaching, and the generation and application of new knowledge about health information management.

Goals:

  1. The faculty of the Health Information Technology Program seeks to educate a student who can assume the entry-level competencies of a registered health information technician (RHIT) upon graduation.
  2. To provide academic advisement and support to students pursuing an A.A.S. Degree in Health Information Technology.
  3. To provide students with a broad education including liberal arts courses, basic biological sciences, and computer sciences along with Health Information Technology courses.
  4. To offer courses in Health Information Technology which are current and academically sound.
  5. To provide clinical affiliation experiences which enhance the students understanding of his/her academic studies and supports the student’s professional growth.
  6. The faculty are ever cognizant of the individual and thus strives to understand and develop in the student those interests, attitudes, skills, habits and appreciation that will help him/her realize his/her maximum potential in their future profession.
  7. Realizing the importance of the students transition of knowledge from classroom theory to practical application of this newly acquired knowledge, close cooperation has been established with a variety of health care facilities (clinical sites), students spend valuable time in these facilities putting their theory to work and thereby also helping to maintain a close relationship of the college and the community.
  8. To provide guidance, information, and assistance to students who are interested in transferring to upper division programs.
  9. To foster an atmosphere of professionalism and competence as students develop their own professional values.
  10. To continue program evaluation via course and curriculum evaluations, exit interviews, graduate evaluations and employee evaluations of our graduates.
  11. To promote and support faculty development and expertise.

The above is achieved by maintaining the principles and standards of SUNY Broome to provide the environment and the experience which promotes the student’s vocational competence, individual growth and social responsibility and to commit the resources of the college to the business, industrial, educational and cultural enrichment of the community.
