SUNY Broome offers a full range of English as a second language (ESL) and English courses that will prepare non-native speakers of English (i.e., international and immigrant) students for college-level English proficiency. There are six levels in the curriculum, and each level is to be completed within one semester. Students are required to take all the courses in each level within the same semester.
ESL students (whether matriculated or non-matriculated) are required to take the ACCUPLACER ESL Placement Test to be placed in an appropriate level. Students who score at levels 1-3 need to enroll in full time, intensive ESL study and continue ESL coursework each semester until they are ready for their college-level English courses. Students who score at levels 4-6 may start taking regular academic courses in their program of study.
Students may be waived from placement testing based on their TOEFL, IELTS, EIKEN or iTEP scores. ESL students taking ESL 125, ENG 107, & ENG 108 won’t have to take ENG 110S, ENG 110, & ENG 111, which are respectively parallel and are designed for native speakers of English. Only ENG 107 and 108 are accepted for credits toward a degree.
