Kidney Donor needed!!

A student at Broome Community College is in need of a kidney donation. Danny Vitanza was injured in a terrible accident that has left him disabled and fighting for his life. Danny suffers from kidney failure. Weekly dialysis treatments keep him alive. His courage to never give up is uplifting. His battle to continue his education is a testimony to his inner strength. Danny’s smile and enjoyment of life is contagious to all who know him.

When I asked Danny how he felt about a possible donor he stated, “Many of us ask “why me”? There is no answer to that question that can make any of us feel better. A person that gives a kidney to one of us is without fail performing the highest of all humanitarian actions and only a very spiritual person would even consider it. It is asking a lot from a person and most people just don’t care enough to help anyone with anything, never mind something as precious as the gift of life to someone that is dying.”

Danny’s blood type is B-. We are looking for someone whose blood type matches. Please give hope to a man who so wonderfully cherishes the gift of life.

If you feel moved to help you may reach me at dacronces@hotmail.com. We earnestly hope to find a donor. We may also need financial help to pay for Danny’s surgery.

Your fellow BCC student and Binghamton citizen,

Dani Cronce

Students of the inaugural run of BHM 123 – Bartending and Beverage Management, a course offered by the Hotel/Restaurant Management Program and taught by Professor Rey C. Wojdat in the Department of Business, attended a field trip to Finger Lakes Distilling on Monday, February 13thFinger Lakes Distilling overlooks beautiful Seneca Lake from a hillside in the heart of New York State’s wine country. The weather cooperated with a clear, crisp, horizon-to-horizon blue sky and sunshine filled day.

As a New York State Farm Distillery, Finger Lakes Distilling uses locally grown fruits and grains to produce a range of high-quality, handmade spirits. Students received an exclusive tour conducted by owner Brian McKenzie. The Finger Lakes Distilling story begins in 2007, when owner Brian McKenzie of Elmira, N.Y., met Thomas Earl McKenzie of Monroeville, Ala., at a craft distiller’s conference. They aren’t related, but they did discover they shared a passion for high-quality, distilled spirits.

Brian, a former bank vice-president, had experience in finance and was interested in starting his own business. Thomas Earl’s background included wine-making, brewing, farming and consulting for distilleries. Owner McKenzie introduced Master Distiller McKenzie to students while explaining the process of distillation.  Students witnessed the custom-crafted, German-made pot still in operation as it produced whiskey and then toured Seneca Lake Distilling’s new production facility and climate-controlled barrel aging storage and completed the tour in the tasting room.

As the region’s only stand-alone distillery, Finger Lakes Distilling focuses exclusively on distilled spirits. As a New York State Farm Distillery, they turn to local farmers for the raw material for their products. Students learned all about the product line which includes whiskey, grappa, a grape-based vodka, a gin created with unique botanicals, brandy, and a number of fruit-based liqueurs.

Also in attendance were Greg Talley, Dean of Business and Public Services and Rick Behr, Chair, Business. Laura St. George, Staff Associate for the Division of Student and Community Engagement also attended and spoke at the presentation who along with Ms. Comanzo and Ms. McPhillips offered advising services to prospective students for several hours following the presentation.
